“Can’t you just get a solid, inexpensive used car?”
That is a common response to my choice of not replacing my vehicle with another one.
Going from driving to taking Uber is a paradigm shift…and it requires knowing how to use the clutch.
It does help me live within my means more effectively, even as I believe in the potential beyond them.
It is the only public transportation afforded the citizens of this rapidly growing city in which I live. Otherwise I would also learn to use the bus. (and for me, the bike thing without bike lanes just isn’t going to happen)
This is how I look at it:
It does require better planning (but how is that a bad thing?). It employs my resourcefulness, which is always a good muscle to strengthen. And it allows me greater opportunity to live within my means at this stage of life. And there are always great weekend rental car deals if I want to go out of town.
As my means increase so will the freedom to travel more. But I sleep better at night knowing that now I don’t have an unexpected flat tire or car repair with its hand on the door knob of my anxiety closet (maybe I can use that closet to store something different entirely!). And the drivers are some pretty interesting people to meet;)

After a few weeks of this I am starting to feel some withdrawal symptoms, lol.

Sometimes I wonder if I can manage without my own car. I completely agree that maintenance and thought of breakdown is such a hassle. Mine is old now and gives trouble. But it sounds like you’ve got a good plan and I hope it works out. 🙂

I do think that it’s not a practical solutionfor everyone. Raising children, living farther than $6 from your place of employment, as well as the logistics of where your destinations are located can rule out viability.
I am fortunate to work in a shopping center with a grocery store and be within a short jump of other things I need. It does have it’s challenges, but I like these challenges better than the other ones;) lol
